On the morning of February 22, 2023, I scheduled a simple Uber ride that turned into a terrifying ordeal. What should have been a routine drop-off ended with reckless driving, an attempted assault, and a frightening escalation—all at the hands of a driver who abandoned professionalism and passenger safety.
At 7:02 AM, I was picked up along with a female passenger by an Uber driver, identified as Jovanny Mahnalp Mercade Guzman. The trip was already pre-paid through the app, with my pick-up and drop-off locations clearly entered. Everything seemed normal at first.
As we approached the drop-off location for the female passenger at a Wawa convenience store, she took longer than expected to exit. I quickly noticed the driver becoming impatient—his body language tense, his gestures aggressive. Since he did not speak English, there was no verbal communication, but it was clear that he was agitated.
To avoid any issues, I took it upon myself to step out of the car and look for the passenger, but she was nowhere to be found. Upon returning to the vehicle, I attempted to explain the situation through gestures, but the driver became more frustrated, aggressively pointing at the drop-off location and demanding I exit the vehicle, even though I had paid for the full ride to my own destination.
Without warning, the driver began driving erratically through the Wawa parking lot, paying no attention to pedestrians. He then:
🚨 Exited through an "entrance-only" lane
🚦 Ran a traffic light
🏎️ Sped recklessly through a restaurant parking lot
I immediately felt unsafe. This was no longer just an uncomfortable situation—it was a serious risk to my well-being.
When we finally reached my actual drop-off location, the driver jumped out of the vehicle, rushed to my side, and opened the passenger door. His next move? Attempting to forcibly remove me from the car.
I posed no threat, yet this driver felt entitled to use force rather than handling the situation professionally. When he blocked my path to exit safely, it resulted in unwanted physical contact—an act that crossed the line into assault.
Instead of calling law enforcement (as any professional would have if there were a real issue), he took matters into his own hands, initiating a physical confrontation.
When his first attempt to physically remove me failed, I held onto the door to prevent him from fleeing. His response? He got out of the car again and attempted to size me up, preparing to physically attack me again.
At this point, I had no idea what he was capable of. He returned to his vehicle and began searching for something.
🔴 Was it a gun?
🔴 A knife?
🔴 Another weapon?
I was on high alert. The driver reemerged with an umbrella—but not for the rain. He swung it aggressively at me, using it as a weapon. Once again, I had to defend myself, ensuring he could not strike me.
With adrenaline rushing and shock setting in, I secured my belongings from the vehicle and immediately left the scene.
I did not receive the full service I paid for, but more importantly, my personal safety was threatened in a way that should NEVER happen to any rideshare passenger.
I refuse to let this situation go unanswered. I am pursuing legal action against the driver for:
✅ Reckless endangerment
✅ Physical assault
✅ Unprofessional conduct
✅ Threatening behavior with a weapon
🚨 Rideshare companies must be held accountable for the drivers they allow on their platforms. 🚨
If you or someone you know has experienced dangerous behavior from a rideshare driver, do not stay silent. Report it. Take legal action. Protect others.
I hope that by sharing my story, more people become aware of the risks and that rideshare companies take greater responsibility for passenger safety.
